Sporting Events Across Spain
Sporting Events Across Spain
I have always been a fan of any and all sports. I was lucky enough to be able to take a class as part of my semester abroad called "Anthropology of Sports in Spain" and I learned a lot about the culture of youth sports and in Spain/Barcelona as well as the differences in sports culture compared to the U.S.
FC Barcelona
Early in my semester, I attended an FC Barcelona game. Growing up watching Messi and the El Clasico games was memorable so I was very excited for this experience.
Unfortunantly, in 2024 the iconic Camp Nou was being renovated so the games for this season were played in an also very cool venue, Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc.
Spain vs Brazil Friendly
My good friend Leo, who was studying abroad in Barcelona as well, is Brazilan. So when we saw that there was going to be a friendly match between Spain and Brazil in Madrid in the new Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, we had no choice but to attend.
It was truly an electric atmosphere, we were extremly close to the field and there were 6 goals scored in total with the final score being 3-3 so we both left happy.
Mutua Madrid Open
Before I came to Barcelona, I knew that the tail end of my experience abroad would coincide with clay court season.
I've been playing tennis since I was 5 years old and Rafael Nadal has always been my favorite player. Even though I've tried over the years, it has been extremley difficult to see Rafa play in person since he had injury problems for many years.
Knowing that this might be the last year Rafa would ever play on tour, I needed to make sure that I was able to see him. However, if you've ever tried to buy tickets for a tennis event, you know its difficult since you don't know who will be playing on the day or time slot you selected until one or two days beforehand.
Luckily, the tickets I got for myself and my father who came to visit Madrid, fell on the exact time where Rafa was playing. We saw a spectacular match and I was so glad to be able to watch the King of Clay play on his preferred surface.
I captured a spectacular point as shown below:
Handball
As part of a class field trip we had opportunity to attend an FC Barcelona handball game.
I had seen handball in the Olympics but I was not very familiar with the rules and such.
I had an amazing time, it was a great atmosphere with chants and songs, there was a good amount of scoring, and I am always up for learning new sports!
